DENVER – Mayor Michael B. Hancock said Tuesday evening he believes he will face a runoff in the Denver mayoral race against Jamie Giellis, with preliminary results showing him well below the threshold necessary to win a third term outright.

As of the preliminary results sent out at 1 a.m. Wednesday, Hancock led Giellis 39.06% to 25.71% Lisa Calderon had received 17.38% of the vote as of that point and Penfield Tate had received 14.84% of the vote.

In order to win a Denver municipal race outright, a candidate must receive 50% plus one vote, lest the race go to a runoff, which is now expected.

“We didn’t lose anything tonight. We get another chance to prove to voters in Denver that we’re moving in the right direction,” Hancock told a crowd of supporters Tuesday evening as the counting continued.

He congratulated Giellis on the support she received but said there was a “clear choice” between him and the former RiNo Art District president, and said he’d be working hard over the next month to try and garner more support.

Hancock is aiming for a third and final mayoral term and says he will continue the work he’s started as mayor if re-elected.

There will be another preliminary report delivered at 11:30 p.m. but results will not be official until they are certified on May 16.

The runoff would take place on June 4.
