DENVER (AP) — A Republican-led state Senate committee has approved a bill that would allow some teachers or other public school employees to carry handguns on campus with appropriate training.
The State, Veterans, and Military Affairs Committee passed the bill, co-sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Chris Holbert of Parker, on a 3-2 party-line vote Tuesday.
The bill goes to the full Senate chamber for consideration. It's certain to be opposed in the Democrat-led House.
Holbert said the bill simply allows local public school districts and charter schools to decide if employees who are concealed carry holders can get safety training by local sheriffs so they can carry on campus.
Opponents said the bill was a way to introduce more guns into schools — and that having them there won't prevent school shootings.
