LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) — Democrats have chosen state Rep. Mike Foote to serve out the term of Sen. Matt Jones, who was elected in November to the Boulder County Board of County Commissioners.

The Daily Camera reports that Foote, who lost a bid for county attorney, was chosen at a party vacancy committee meeting in Longmont on Saturday.

Foote will serve the remaining two years of Jones' senate term.

He said he will introduce legislation to ban bump stocks, the accessories used in the 2017 mass shooting in Las Vegas that killed 58 people.

Republicans controlling the state Senate killed similar legislation, but the party lost its hold of that chamber in the November election. Democrats augmented their control of the House.

The 2019 legislative session starts in January.
