DENVER -- Congressman Jared Polis says President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall is a “boondoggle” and says the president’s threat to shut down the government if Congress doesn’t fund the building of that wall is irresponsible.

“He promised during the campaign that some other country would pay for it, a lot of us knew at the time that wasn’t true,” Polis told Anne Trujillo on this week’s Politics Unplugged. “He’s now asking the American taxpayers to pay not just a few billion, $30 to $40 billion of deficit spending. Putting your children and mine in further debt that won’t even be effective at doing anything about our broken immigration system.”

Polis is running for Colorado Governor right now. He says one reason is that he believes more can be done on many issues at the state level than the national level.

“I have a plan for our state to reach 100 percent renewable energy by 2040,” he said. “Cleaner air, healthier kids, green jobs. We can do it. On education, there are a lot of problems coming from Washington.”

And while fellow democratic Congressman Ed Perlmutter has decided not to challenge Polis in the Governor’s race, Polis is thrilled his friend has decided to run for re-election to Congress.

“No one works harder, he’s a roll up your sleeves advocate for Colorado,” Polis said. “If I do have the opportunity to be governor I’ll be very glad that we have Ed Perlmutter in our delegation.”

Politics Unplugged airs Sundays at 4:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Denver7.
