DENVER -- Former State Senator Morgan Carroll is the new head of Colorado’s Democratic Party.

She knows there are challenges ahead, but says she’s looking forward to the job.

“This is probably the most dire time that we have ever seen on every issue that we care about,” Carroll told Denver7’s Anne Trujillo on this week’s Politics Unplugged. “But it’s also an incredible opportunity with warm people, passionate, ready to engage, ready to get involved, ready to try new ideas than anything I’ve seen in my lifetime.”

Carroll, who tried unsuccessfully to unseat Republican Congressman Mike Coffman in November, takes over the state party reigns from four-term party chair Rick Palacio.

Carroll says she hopes to reach out to Democrats in every corner of the state.

“[I really want to] show a vision of what the Colorado Democratic Party is,” she said, adding the party is there to expand economic and educational opportunities while defending constitutional rights and liberties for everyone in the state. “We feel that all of those issues are profoundly in jeopardy at the moment. We are all deeply concerned and I think this goes well beyond the Democratic party right now. I think our country is nervous frankly scared with some of radical recklessness that we’ve been seeing with the Republicans in DC at the moment.”
