A doctor in India is accused of performing a botched C-section while drunk, killing both the mother and child, the BBC reported on Wednesday.

According to the BBC, the botched procedure took place on Monday at a hospital in the western India state of Gujarat. Hospital officials told the BBC that the doctor accused of botching the procedure was Dr. PJ Lakhani, a 15-year doctor at the hospital.

Hospital officials told the BBC said that a Breathalyzer test confirmed that Lakhani was intoxicated.

The BBC reported that the family was told that the child had died while the mother was bleeding profusely. The family had the mother, identified as Kamini Chachi, transported to another hospital, but died in transit.

Police confirmed to the BBC that Lakhani had been arrested.

According to India Today, Lakhani was charged under the state's prohibition act. Lakhani could face additional charges pending a review by a committee headed by a civil surgeon.
