DENVER — Mayor Michael Hancock issued a public health order Friday canceling all public events at city-owned and operated venues in Denver, including Red Rocks Amphitheater, the Colorado Convention Center and the Denver Performing Arts Center.

The order, which was issued in response to the spread of the novel coronavirus, will last for at least 30 days, through April 12. City recreation centers and libraries will also be closed until further notice.

"These are not easy decisions, but the welfare of our residents and visitors is at forefront of our thinking," Hancock said.

Gov. Jared Polis earlier Friday issue guidance prohibiting gatherings of more than 250 people.

Hancock said the Denver Police Department will also implement a modified process for taking reports. Police will begin receiving reports over the phone, instead of in person. People can call in non-emergency reports at 720-913-2000 and continue to call 911 for emergencies.

Chief Housing Officer Britta Fisher said the city will be providing isolation areas in shelters for people experiencing homelessness. The city is also looking into off-site locations to house the homeless.
