Rescuers prepare for hiking season

Posted

Volunteer rescuers helped a pair of stranded hikers near Idaho Springs Reservoir Sunday afternoon back to safety after the hikers lost the trail along a snowy path.

Steve Wilson, with the Alpine Rescue Team, said both hikers are okay. He also said this is just one of more than a hundred rescues he expects for the year.

“Our team can expect a busy summer of missions,” he said.

Last year, volunteers helped with a record 133 rescues and expects a similar number this summer, if not more.

“Probably for the foreseeable future,” he said.

On Friday, first responders had to rescue a group of stranded hikers at Pikes Peak and on Thursday another stranded hiker had to be rescued at Horsetooth Falls.

Wilson said the busiest time for rescues starts after Memorial Day.

He offers this advice for anyone planning a hiking trip:

“Be prepared for changing weather just because it’s nice in Denver doesn’t mean it’s nice everywhere,” he said, “especially in the mountains.”

He said hikers should bring plenty of food and water and extra layers for the cold weather, including a rain coat.
