Regulators: Aspen lift problems handled properly

Posted

State regulators in charge of chairlift safety have determined that Aspen Skiing Co. properly handled the Dec. 23 shutdown that left 76 skiers dangling for hours.

The Aspen Daily Newsreports that the Colorado Passenger Tramway Safety Board on Tuesday issued a statement saying it would not take any additional action in connection to the Dec. 23 shutdown.

According to documents Aspen Skiing Co. submitted to the board, the lift stopped working because there was a failure of one of the dozens of circuits and switches in the machine.

The breakdown was the third consecutive ski season in which a mechanical issue disabled one of the company's chairlifts during a busy holiday period.

There were no injuries and passengers were evacuated over the course of two hours.
