A nine-year-old girl died Friday after she was struck by an SUV in the parking lot of an apartment building in Estes Park, according to the Estes Park Police Department.

The crash was reported at about 4:23 p.m. Friday, a police spokesperson said. EMS responders tried to perform CPR on the child, who was identified as Ayana Fernandez Portillo, but she was unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV was Javier Ulises Hernandez-Solis, 29, a friend of the passenger, Carla Fernandez Portillo, 26, who is the child's sister. Both have been fully cooperative as Estes Park Police investigate the incident.

The girl was in the parking lot of the apartment building, where she lived, as the driver was exiting the complex, according to police. The circumstances are still under investigation

"An investigation is underway, but initially this appears to be a tragic accident," said Police Chief Wes Kufeld. "We are extremely saddened by this loss and our hearts are with Ayana's family."

No further information is available at this time during the investigation. Chief Kufeld is requesting privacy for the family at this time.
