DENVER – Utility crews worked through the night to restore power to thousands of people who were left in the dark following Monday morning’s snowstorm.

The storm dumped several inches of heavy, wet snow on parts of the Denver metro area, and all that added weight on trees that still have their leaves led to downed branches and power lines.

In all, nearly 100,000 Xcel Energy customers were affected by outages on Monday. As of 9 p.m., there were still about 5,000 customers without power and by 7 a.m. Tuesday, that number had dropped to fewer than 1,500.

More than 200 Xcel Energy workers were out and about Monday and about 60 of them continued working overnight.

An Xcel Energy spokesman said the company hopes to have restoration work wrapped up by midday Tuesday.
