The fireworks show in Fairplay was cut short when suddenly dozens of mortars started exploding on the ground.
"A mortar exploded prematurely at approximately ten feet off the ground and ignited a container of other mortars, causing all of those mortars (approximately 100) to explode," the town of Fairplay said in a news release sent to Denver7.
Home videos posted on YouTube of the fireworks showed the mortars on the ground exploding in just a few seconds.
One worker was taken to Summit Medical Center in Frisco. Officials said the employee was treated and released.
"The town is conducting an investigation into this incident," said town administrator Tina Darrah.
