FORT COLLINS, Colo. – A Poudre High School student and his mother are dead following a crash in Fort Collins Thursday night.

Police said two vehicles were involved in the crash at the intersection of Richards Lake Road and Giddings Road shortly before 7:30 p.m.

A 1985 Chevrolet Corvette heading east on Richards Lake Road crashed into the passenger side of a 1994 Honda According going south on Giddings Road. Both vehicles came to rest in a field and the front passenger from each vehicle was ejected, police said.

The driver and front passenger of the Accord, Joshua Cortez, 17, and his mother, Kelly Cortez, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A Facebook post on the Poudre Touchdown Club page identified Cortez as a defensive end on the Poudre High School football team.

A spokeswoman for the Poudre School District said counselors were on campus at Poudre High School on Friday to help grieving students.

On Friday evening, the Poudre High School Impalas placed a No. 66 sticker on their helmets during their game against Pomona High School, to honor their teammate and his mother.

Denver7 reporter Jason Gruenauer, who covered the game, also saw students from the opposing team showing up to the game with signs supporting Poudre High School as they deal with the death of one of their own.

The driver of the Corvette, identified as Connor Givans, 18, was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital. The front passenger, David Muncy, 19, was taken to the hospital by helicopter.

Police said they’re looking into whether speed was a factor in the crash. Investigators do not believe alcohol played a role.
