DENVER – Police arrested a 21-year-old woman last week on suspicion of child abuse after doctors discovered her child had multiple broken bones when she was brought to Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Myra Deleon, 21, was arrested on one felony count of child abuse last Thursday a day after she brought her child to the hospital with respiratory issues, according to a probable cause statement for her arrest.

The police document says that she brought her child, a girl whose age was redacted in the document, to the hospital Wednesday night.

As doctors and nurses were trying to figure out what was wrong with the child, they discovered bruising inside her ears, dried-up blood and other abrasions, according to the probable cause statement.

Because of those injuries, a full skeletal exam of the girl and x-rays were ordered, which showed the girl had a fracture left fibula, bilateral tibia fractures and rib fractures which were healing at the time. The officer who wrote the probable cause statement wrote that doctors and nurses said the injuries were non-accidental because of the girl’s age.

The next day, Deleon agreed to make a statement to police about the girl’s injuries. Much of the portion of the probable cause statement that details what Deleon alleged happened to the girl is redacted, but an unredacted portion says that a doctor said that the “mechanism explained by Myra would cause the leg fractures, and it is consistent with child abuse.”

The probable cause statement said the girl was placed into protective custody after the interview.

Court records show Deleon has posted a personal recognizance bond in the case and that her second advisement is set for Feb. 28.
