LONGMONT, Colo. — Police in Longmont said they have found a dog that was taken while its owner suffered from a seizure, but they are still attempting to identify the woman who appeared to have stolen the dog in the first place.

On Tuesday, a 59-year-old man decided to walk with his dog to the 7-Eleven at 1650 N. Main Street in Longmont. He had been feeling ill all day, police said, and when he arrived at the store, he fell, had a seizure and was transported to the hospital, where he died.

While reviewing video tape of the incident, police noticed that a woman took the dog from the scene as police and fire personnel helped the man, according to the Longmont Department of Public Safety.

The man’s family watched the tape and confirmed they did not know the woman. The Longmont Department of Public Safety said they don’t know why the woman took the dog. The dog is named Sampson, they said.

Longmont Deputy Police Chief Jeff Satur ended up finding the dog by accident on Wednesday afternoon, he told Denver7.

He was heading to the location of a tip about the dog when he spotted a couple walking the dog outside a Longmont motel. He talked with the couple and discovered it was the missing dog, but the couple said the dog was given to them by a woman — likely the woman seen in the surveillance video, Satur said.

The family of the man who died was reunited with the dog on Wednesday afternoon around 3:45 p.m.

Satur said that police will not be pressing charges against the couple who had the dog Wednesday but said they were still investigating possible charges against the woman believed to have taken the dog.
