Wildlife officials keeping an eye on pregnant elk on Lookout Mountain

GOLDEN, Colo. – Wildlife officials will be back on Lookout Mountain Thursday as they try to check up on an elk that went into labor earlier this week.

The elk cow was spotted on Denver7’s remote-controlled camera on the mountain Tuesday evening, when a calf’s hooves could be seen protruding from the mother.

Many people have watched the video feed closely to try to see the birth, but as of Wednesday, it appeared she still hadn’t successfully delivered the calf and she soon walked out of view of the camera.

Though wildlife officials initially said they weren’t going to get involved, Colorado Parks and Wildlife workers decided to head up the mountain Wednesday afternoon to check on her since they were concerned her labor was taking too long. They’d planned to tranquilize the elk so a vet could check her out but the animal kept moving and officials said they didn’t want to get too close and cause her any stress.

Officials will return Thursday to try to get close enough to the elk to safely examine her.
