CASTLE PINES, Colo. — Crews were able to gain control of a grass fire burning near Castle Pines Tuesday afternoon that was threatening a nearby apartment complex.

Authorities issued an evacuation order to residents of the complex around 3 p.m., but announced shortly after that the fire was under control and no structures were lost.

The fire was burning behind the old Safeway building near the Castle Pines Interstate 25 southbound off ramp. Authorities were asking drivers to avoid the area so emergency responders could work.

South Metro Fire Rescue said the fire looks like it started behind the apartments just adjacent to I-25 and moved South. Witnesses saw the flames grow fast as they hit the trees.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, crews further north are working to contain a large brush fire near Broomfield. The fire is burning near 66th and Ellingwood in the open space behind a residential area.
