CONIFER, Colo. — A wildfire burning near Conifer in Jefferson County Tuesday prompted evacuations in the area.

Officials ordered Foxton-area residents to evacuate due to the close-burning fire, which grew to about 50 acres in size by Tuesday evening. The evacuation order was lifted at 7:15 p.m.

During the evacuation, residents were asked to leave the area and if go to an evacuation center at Elk Creek Elementary School, where nursing staff were on-site, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said.

The sheriff's office initially said three separate fires were burning in the area, but they are now treating it as one fire, the Foxton Fire.

Crews from multiple agencies were dispatched to fight the Foxton Fire. On Wednesday morning, officials said firefighters will likely fight this fire for the remainder of the week.

An investigation into the cause is ongoing.
