HASTY, Colo. — A wildfire is burning on the John Martin Reservoir State Wildlife Area near Fort Lyon, forcing a brief evacuation, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).
The fire is burning on the 19,471-acre property in inaccessible Arkansas River bottoms amid heavy winds. The Las Animas Fire Department is the lead of 10 agencies fighting the fire.
The Bent County Sheriff's Office has since lifted the evacuation of Fort Lyon.
Officials said he fire is approximately 80% contained and is estimated to be between 3,000 and 4,000 acres.
It's unclear how the fire started.
