WIGGINS, Colo. – Wiggins High School and Middle School were dismissed for the day Tuesday after a gun threat was made to the school, but no gun was found after the student the threat originated with was searched by police.
The town of Wiggins and Wiggins police told Denver7 Tuesday morning that School District Superintendent Trent Kerr made police aware of a possible threat just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The town, located about 70 miles northeast of Denver, said a parent told the superintendent that her son was in a Snapchat group chat and received a photo Monday night of a gun inside a backpack with a caption saying something close to, “This is going to happen at school tomorrow.”
Once the superintendent told police, Wiggins schools were placed on lockdown and lock-in, the town said, and the student who sent the picture was detained by police. The town said the student’s backpack and car were searched and that no weapon was found.
“Once the student’s parents arrived at the school, the student was questioned, and the picture was determined to be a ‘joke,’” the town wrote in a news release.
The town said that police do not believe there is a threat to students or the public, but the middle and high schools were both dismissed for the rest of the day. The case remains under investigation, police said.
They said the student accused of sending the photo is a high school student and that he told police the gun in question was an airsoft gun.
