DENVER — You might see a lot of the color blue throughout the month of April, and now you'll know why. Many are donning blue clothing and displaying blue pinwheels to support child abuse prevention.
April marks Child Abuse Prevention Month across the U.S., and agencies across the nation are supporting the cause differently.
In Colorado, the Denver Sheriff's Office is calling on residents to wear blue on Tuesday, every Tuesday, to show support.
The City of Denver is also showing support, with the office of Human Services offering up activities and opportunities to promote awareness.
One such activity is placing blue pinwheels across the City of Denver, thanks to the support of community partners, businesses and more. The city and county buildings will also be lighted in blue.
Advocates for child abuse prevention say the awareness is much needed, as in 2015, an estimated 1,670 children died from abuse or neglect in the U.S.
Beyond that, centers support hundreds of thousands of children who are living victims of abuse.
More than 3 million children are in Child Protective Services and advocates say this awareness can help drop those numbers and hold offenders accountable.
Denver Human Services representatives say preventing child abuse is the responsibility of the community at large, and everybody can play a part even just by knowing the number to call if child abuse is observed.
Anybody who wants to report child abuse or neglect can call 1-844-264-5437 (1-844-CO-4-KIDS).
