DENVER – If you’re looking for the safest Colorado cities in which to settle down, your best bet is to look outside of the state’s metropolitan areas, according to a new report from the National Council for Home Safety and Security.

The home security trade group released its list of the 50 “safest” cities in Colorado and tiny Johnstown came out on top.

Johnstown, with a population of just over 14,000, takes the honor of “safest” city due to its low crime rate: Just three reported violent crimes and 68 property crimes for every 1,000 residents, according to the latest data from the FBI.

Frederick comes in second with just one violent crime and 73 property crimes, followed by Louisville with 16 violent crimes and 115 property crimes.

Sorry, Denver. You come in near the bottom of the list at number 49. Last place goes to Grand Junction.

The list doesn’t include every municipality in the state; NCHSS excluded cities that have fewer than 5,000 residents and those that didn’t submit complete crime reports to the FBI. Notably absent is Thornton, which a different report had listed as the safest city in the country.

Here are the top 10 “safest” cities, according to NCHSS:
1. Johnstown
2. Frederick
3. Louisville
4. Firestone
5. Erie
6. Eagle
7. Milliken
8. Windsor
9. Fort Lupton
10. Gypsum
