DENVER – Westminster police shot and killed man in Montbello Friday night and Denver police are investigating.

According to the Denver Police Department, the shooting happened in the 5300 block of Billings Street. The police department tweeted that information at 9 p.m. Friday.

DPD said an adult man was transported to a hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. No officers were injured.

On Saturday, the Denver Police Department released more details surrounding the circumstances.

According to Denver police, officers from the Westminster Police Department were conducting a surveillance operation at the address where the shooting occurred. Police were attempting to locate an adult male suspect wanted for attempted murder in Westminster.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., the suspect left the home and Westminster officers attempted to contact the suspect, who then fired a handgun at the officers. Three of the four WPD officers present returned fire and discharged a total of 27 rounds, Denver police said in a news release.

The suspect, identified Tuesday by the medical examiner's office as 37-year-old Drew Lucero, was struck multiple times.

The investigation is being conducted by a multi-agency investigative team comprised of members of the Denver and Aurora Police Departments as well as the Denver District Attorney’s Office. The DA will determine if the officer's actions were lawful at the conclusion of the investigation.
