HERSHEY, Neb. — A Westminster family has been identified as the people who died at the scene of a crash involving a semi truck near Hershey, Nebraska Wednesday.
Three people died in the crash, including a child, according to Nebraska State Patrol. They've been identified as Edgar Navarro, 24, Idayalid Bautista, 25 and Alexa Navarro, 4. A three-year-old girl and an eleven-month-old girl were also in the crash. They were both transported to Great Plains Health in North Platte.
They've since been transported to a hospital in Denver with what are believed to be injuries that aren't life-threatening.
Edgar is the dad of all three children. Bautista is the mother of the two surviving children. The driver of the semi was not injured.
Navarro's sister, Diana Munoz, told Denver7 that her brother and his fiance, Bautista, had moved to Colorado to build a better life for their children.
She said Navarro was traveling on Wednesday to surprise her and her other family members in Chicago.
"He was going to surprise me and my whole family. The only person that knew was my husband," she said.
The crash happened around 10:41 a.m. CT on I-80 near mile marker 167. The family was in a GMC Yukon, driven by Edgar. They lost control in the winter weather conditions, crossed the median, entered the westbound lanes and collided with the westbound semi.
On Christmas Day, Munoz said she and her mother had arrived in Colorado to pick up the children who survived the crash. Munoz said her brother's loss has left their family with immeasurable grief.
"I love them so much it wasn't there time to go,"
A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family of Edgar Navarro and Bautista. A separate GoFundMe has been set up for Alexa Navarro's family.
