One man is in custody after a wild chase through fields, barbed wire fences, and over ditches in Weld County.

Deputies said they were initially called to the Kum-N-Go in Mead at 7 a.m. on Sunday for a man causing a disturbance.

The Weld County Sheriff's Office said when a deputy made contact with the man, the man drove his Ford F250 truck in reverse, backed up onto the lawn and jumped a curb to get away.

"The suspect then fled northbound across the center median on Highway 66, through a parking lot and then north on Weld county road 9 1/2 disregarding two stop signs in the process," the sheriff's office said in a news release.

Deputies said from there the chase went:

  • Northbound into the Rio Vista Dairy at WCR 32 & 9 ½ where the suspect drove into a field, through several barbwire fences and jumped his vehicle across a concrete ditch.
  • The suspect went north to another residence, dumped his truck and tried to steal a car, but couldn't start it.
  • Suspect got back in the F250, unsuccessfully attempted to ram the deputies vehicle and then went south on 9 ½ turning eastbound on WCR 32.
  • Suspect jumped out of his moving truck and fled over a fence into a field.

Deputies said a nearby resident saw the suspect running through his property, jumped out of his own vehicle and confronted the suspect.

"The citizen attempted to subdue the suspect, slowing him down while he was located by deputies," the sheriff's office said.

The deputy said he hit the suspect with a Taser, the suspect tried to run, but a second deputy subdued him.

"Once taken into custody the suspect stated that he was on meth," the sheriff's office said. "The suspect was checked by medical personnel before being taken to the Weld County Jail."
