Wanted sex offender shot by JeffCo deputy

Posted

A sex offender wanted for failing to register and sex assault was shot by a Jefferson County deputy Friday night after the sheriff's office said he pulled a gun on two deputies.

Michael Anthony Manaois, 38, was inside his father's shoe store after hours when deputies came to arrest on the two outstanding felony warrants at 10:40 p.m.

When deputies arrived at Governors Plaza Shoes & Service near west Belleview Avenue and south Kipling Parkway, Manaois locked the door and refused to come out, according to Jefferson County Sheriff's spokeswoman Jacki Kelley.

Deputies went inside the store and chased Manaois, who escaped out the back door. Deputies released a K9 officer to help catch him.

As Manaois ran into the alley behind the store, he was confronted by two deputies waiting there. Kelley said he then pointed a handgun at the deputies, prompting one of them to shoot him twice. Manaois was almost simultaneously bit by the K9.

No deputies were injured in the shooting.

Through his attorney, Michael Anthony Torres, Manaois' father and owner of Governors Plaza Shoes and Service, said the following:

Michael thanks God that it appears no one in law enforcement or anyone else was hurt and his thoughts and prayers are focused on the welfare of his son. He asks for prayers for his son and his family. He asks for all to respect the privacy of the family during this difficult time.

The suspect was listed in critical condition following surgery at Swedish Medical Center early Saturday morning. He is expected to recover.

A Critical Incident Response Team is heading up the investigation into the shooting.

The sheriff's office said that in addition to the charges for sexual assault/sexually violent predator and failure to register as a sex offender, Manaois will face additional charges for multiple counts of felony menacing when he is released from the hospital.

Denver7 found he has a long arrest record dating back to the 1990's.
