COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –The epic incline up one of Colorado’s steepest peaks that serves as a right-of-passage for many is now closed.

The Manitou Incline in Colorado Springs closed Monday as many of us were looking up at the sky to catch a glimpse of the solar eclipse.

While closed, the popular trail will undergo a months-long project that will bring several improvements to the heavily-used incline.

Crews will stabilize parts of the slope and improve drainage. They will also fix damaged retaining walls, anchor some of the ties on the incline’s upper third and clean up exposed rebar and debris.

The work is expected to last for four months.

This is the third phase of a project that aims to improve safety and accessibility at the Manitou Incline as well as extend the life of the trail, which has been damaged by erosion.

The estimated cost of the project is $2 million and funding comes from a disaster recovery block grant.
