LA PLATA COUNTY, Colo. — All Coloradans can rally behind one small animal shelter with the opportunity to win it big.

The La Plata County Humane Society is one of just five small shelters across the U.S. included as a finalist in Animal Planet's contest to win a $50,000 facelift.

The Pet Nation Renovation competition offered up the opportunity to thousands of organizations to petition for funds by sending in a video explaining how the money would be used.

With the help of the 45-person staff at La Plata County's Humane Society, a winning video was created and sent in. Executive Director Michelle Featheringill said she and her staff are proud to be "the only national finalist in the State of Colorado."

"Everyone in Colorado can all root for one shelter," Featheringill said.

According to Featheringill, the shelter can house just under 100 animals, and is nearly always at full occupancy. She said the money would be best used on updates directly for their residents, namely on kennels and cages.

Due to budgetary restrictions, the building — which has been standing since the '90s — hasn't seen many needed upgrades.

If Featheringill's organization wins, she said Animal Planet would listen to recommendations, then come in and make the necessary upgrades.

"There are so many places we could use it," she said.

Voting lasts through April 2.
