Upcoming Colorado high school sports delayed as COVID-19 cases rise

DENVER — Upcoming Colorado high school sports, including basketball, hockey, soccer and spring football, have been delayed as COVID-19 cases continue to rise across the state, the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) announced Monday.

CHSAA's "B" season — which includes boys and girls basketball, skiing, wrestling, swim and dive, hockey and spirit — was set to begin Jan. 4, but the season will be delayed by at least several weeks after CHSAA officials consulted with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

CDPHE director Jill Hunsaker Ryan wrote in a letter to CHSAA officials that "we do not have enough information about what disease incidence and hospitalization capacity will look like in January" and therefore, the CHSAA "B" season won't be allowed to begin on time.

No indoor sports are allowed in counties under "Level Red" restrictions and the CDPHE said no variances will be granted to CHSAA sports at this time. Denver and about 15 other counties are under "Level Red" restrictions.

CHSAA is proposing a Feb. 1 start date for season B sports, but no exact timetable has been set. The change in schedule would also delay sports in seasons "C" and "D," which includes soccer, volleyball, baseball and football for schools who opted for a spring season.
