BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. – A Boulder County jury on Friday found a University of Colorado student acted in self-defense when he stabbed another student to death during a downtown brawl last December.

Ian Scheuermann, 23, faced second-degree murder, first-degree assault and felony menacing charges in the case after he stabbed fellow student Sean Hudson and threatened another man, Jeremy Zeller, during an altercation outside the Sundown Saloon that stemmed from an argument at the same bar a week earlier.

At some point, Hudson ended up on top of Scheuermann during the fight, and Scheuermann stabbed him six times.

Prosecutors argued during the week-long trial that Hudson did not deserve to die because of what initially was a shoving match, while Scheuermann’s defense attorney argued he had the right to defend himself with the pocket knife because Hudson ended up on top of him, punching him.

But the jury decided there wasn’t enough evidence to prove Scheuermann acted in any way other than in self-defense and acquitted him of all charges.
