DENVER — Three suspects were taken into custody after a chase and shootout with a Dever police officer early Wednesday.
The young men were driving a vehicle that was carjacked at E. 16th Avenue and Nome Street in Aurora around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, said Ron Thomas, a division chief with the Denver Police Department.
Denver officers spotted the vehicle around 12:50 a.m. and gave chase. The driver lost control and crashed at E. 16th Avenue and Quebec Street. All three men got out of the car and began to run.
"One of the occupants of that vehicle turned and fired shots at the officers. One of the officers did return fire," Thomas said.
No officers were injured and two of the suspects managed to escape into the neighborhood.
Calls went out to residents warning them to stay inside and shelter in place while officers searched for the suspects.
"After a lengthy search, three of the suspects were all taken into custody," Thomas said. "One was taken into custody right at the vehicle where the chase had concluded. Two other suspects were found hiding."
One of the suspects was injured by a K-9 officer. A third suspect was found with what appeared to be a "self-inflicted gunshot wound." His condition was unknown.
The Denver Police Department warned drivers that Quebec Street between Colfax Avenue and E. 17th Avenue would be closed through the morning rush hour.
