Thousands join for Race for the Cure in Denver

Tens of thousands of people showed their support for the fight against breast cancer by running and walking in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Colorado Sunday morning.

The annual benefit for breast cancer awareness includes a 5K run, a 5K walk, a Family Fun Walk and a Survivor Celebration at the Pepsi Center.

Several streets and Interstate ramps were closed for the race, including northbound I-25 to Auraria and southbound I-25 to Colfax. The ramps should reopen by 1 p.m. according to a tweet from the Colorado Department of Transportation.

In 2014, the race drew about 30,000 people and raised more than $2 million.

One in seven women in Colorado will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, according to Susan G. Komen Colorado.

Since 1980 the survival rates for women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer have improved. It use to be 74% of these women lived longer than five years. Now the number is 99%, according to Komen foundation.
