PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado drivers could soon adorn their vehicles with a special license plate that celebrates the Pueblo chile.

A bill making its way through the state legislature would add the new plate design to the dozens of other special plates that are currently available.

The design features a clipping from a Pueblo chile plant with the Rocky Mountains in the background and the words “PUEBLO CHILE” along the bottom.

Representative Daneya Esgar presented House Bill 17-1012 to the Transportation and Energy Appropriations Committee on Feb. 2. It has cleared the House and is now headed for the Senate.

“We want to make sure that all of Colorado knows that Pueblo Chile is our chile. Pueblo Chile is Colorado’s chile, and eventually will be the leading brand of chile across the United States," Esgar said.

Colorado has some friendly competition with its neighbors to the south. New Mexico's legislature is also currently considering creating a chile pepper license plate, reports KOAT.

In addition to the standard DMV fees, the Pueblo chile license plate would require two one-time fees of $25, which would go to the state’s highway users tax fund and the licensing services cash fund.
