Thanksgiving holiday travel at Denver International Airport: 7 Things to Know

Posted

The Thanksgiving travel season starts Friday and airports around the country are expecting a record number of passengers.

The busiest travel days are expected to be Friday, Nov. 16, Wednesday, Nov. 21, and Sunday, Nov. 25, according to Airlines for America spokesperson Rebecca Spicer.

If you're flying during the Thanksgiving period, here are 7 Things to Know:

1. Download your airline's app to get updates on gate changes and delays.

2. Check in at home and print your boarding pass or get it sent to your phone. That will help you avoid a delay in the check-in line.

3. Check your airline's website/app before you leave home to make sure your flight is on time.

4. Plan extra time for parking. When the Pikes Peak lot fills up, travelers have to use the Mount Elbert lot, which involves a slightly longer drive.

5. Check security wait times when you arrive at the airport. DIA's website lists the wait times for north security, south security and the bridge security checkpoint.

6. If you're taking the train to DIA, check RTD's website for delays and closures. For example, the A-line train will be closed from 3 a.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday this weekend. There will be a bus shuttle in place.

7. If you still need airline tickets, look for flights on Thanksgiving Day to find the cheapest seats. Consider coming back on the Saturday or Tuesday after Thanksgiving to avoid the highest costs.
