A teenager was killed and two others were hospitalized after a vehicle crash in Greeley Friday night, a spokesperson with the police department said.

It all happened after an officer with the Greeley Police Department tried to stop a silver Dodge Durango in the area of 8th Ave. and 8th Street at around 8:15 p.m., Sergeant Joseph Tymkowych of the Greeley Police Department said.

Tymkowych said the Durango failed to yield and drove off at a high-rate of speed. The officer did not try to chase the vehicle, but instead pulled off to a side street to avoid a dangerous situation, according to a statement.

About four minutes later, at around 8:19 p.m., a traffic accident happened involving the Durango and a red Dodge Stratus going north on Highway 85 at 8th street.

The driver of the Stratus, now identified as Riley Young, 17, of Strasburg, was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in that vehicle was taken to North Colorado Medical Center in critical condition.

Tymkowych said the driver of the Durango was ejected from the vehicle after it rolled several times during the crash and was found in the field northeast of the intersection. That person was also taken to Colorado Medical Center in critical condition.

The investigation continues at this time; however witnesses to the accident told officers the Dodge Durango was traveling at a high rate of speed just before the impact and was estimated by them to be in excess of 80 MPH, Tymkowych said.
