ESTES PARK, Colo. – A teacher at Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center in Estes Park has been arrested on suspicion of child sex abuse after being accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.

Erin Byrd, 22, was arrested on Sunday on a charge of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.

Deputies said Byrd was accused of an “inappropriate relationship” with a 17-year-old student at the alternative school while Byrd was employed as a teacher. She began working at the school in September 2017, deputies said.

According to Eagle Rock School, Byrd was a student teacher at the school. She was fired after the school learned of the "appearance of inappropriate conduct with a student" in March. At that time, the school also notified law enforcement.

The school said it's in the process of an internal review looking at ways to strengthen its standards of conduct and will also utilize an independent third party to review the school's policies.

Byrd was released from custody Sunday on $10,000 bond.

Deputies are seeking anyone who may have been a victim of abuse or anyone who may have information that could help with their investigation. Tips can be made via phone by calling Investigator Rita Servin at 970-498-5167.
