Standoff at Fort Collins Kmart ends with arrest

Posted

Fort Collins Police say their department's SWAT team negotiation with an armed woman has ended peacefully.

Police say the woman was involved in a hit-and-run in the Kmart parking lot, near South College Avenue and East Drake Road, at 10:15 a.m. Monday.

The Fort Collins Police Department identified her as Pauline Amaniera, 33. When officers tried to approach Amaniera in her white Nissan Titan, officers say the woman was pointing a gun to her head.

Police think the woman may have intentionally hit several other vehicles in the parking lot. No one was hurt in those collisions.

Police say she did not point the gun at officers or any other people but she refused to comply with commands to put down the gun and exit the vehicle. Hours of attempts to de-escalate the situation, which included conversations with the woman over the phone and using chemical agents outside of her car, were unsuccessful.

The SWAT team finally launched a chemical agent into the back of Amaniera's car. She then got out of the vehicle and officres peacefully took the woman into custody just before 2 p.m.

The weapon was later determined to be an airsoft gun.

Amaniera is charged with criminal mischief and domestic violence. More charges are pending. She also had outstanding warrants for charges of assault and failure to appear in court for cruelty to a child.

She was booked into Larimer County Jail.

The Kmart was on lockdown and neighboring businesses were evacuated.

Nearby roads were also closed during the standoff.
