A suspect who barricaded himself in El Paso County on New Year's Day was taken into custody for allegedly hitting his roommate in the head with a hammer while he slept.

Deputies with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said at around 7 p.m. on Friday, a deputy was dispatched to Memorial Hospital in reference to an assault that had just occurred.

Upon arriving at the hospital, the victim told the deputy his roommate, Duane Moore, 64, had hit him in the head with a hammer several times while he was sleeping in his living room recliner.

Several law enforcement units went to the scene where the incident took place and tried to get a hold of the suspect, but had no luck. A SWAT team was eventually called to assist and they deployed a small robot to search for Moore.

The SWAT team was able to get inside the home and took Moore into custody without incident.

Moore has been booked into the Criminal Justice Center on an outstanding parole violation warrant and charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, and felony menacing.
