ALAMOSA, Colo. — This year’s above-average snowpack is making for some gnarly surge surfing on Medano Creek at Great Sand Dunes National Park.

Crowds filled the park this weekend to take advantage of the creek’s surge flow, a naturally-occurring, but rare phenomenon where creek water flows in waves across the sand.

And this year’s surge has many stoked, thanks to the area’s epic snowpack, which is currently 160% of normal.

Park officials recommend hitting the waves early, as the flow is generally highest at dawn and lowest at dusk.

Check detailed creek conditions and forecast flow on the National Park Service website.
