WHITEWATER, Colo. -- An explosion at a factory in Whitewater seriously injured one person and forced evacuations of nearby buildings Monday afternoon. 

The Grand Junction Fire Department responded to the American Pioneer Powder facility on Blair road, a plant that makes gun powder, around 4:30 p.m. 

Firefighters found multiple structures on fire and tweeted out this photo of the scene.

A one-mile area around the plant had to be evacuated as crews put out the fires. 

One main building and two storage buildings were destroyed in the explosion and fire.

An explosion at a factory in Whitewater seriously injured one person and evacuated nearby buildings Monday evening. Crews were called around 4:30 p.m. to the American Pioneer Powder, Inc. on 1475 Blair Road. The plant makes gun powder.

A 1 mile area around the plant was evacuated.
