State legislature to debate gender change bill

Posted

DENVER -- State lawmakers Thursday will be debating whether or not Coloradans who change their gender should be allowed to change their birth certificates.

Under the current law, you can't change your gender on your birth certificate unless you have a surgical procedure and go to court.

“I think this is really about fairness and privacy and allowing Coloradans who are making sure their documents align with their gender, have the ability to do so,” said Rep. Daneya Esgar (D-Pueblo.)

Under Representative's Esgar's bill, a Coloradan would be allowed to change their birth certificate with a note from a doctor.

This is the third year the bill has been introduced. It will be voted on in committee later Thursday.
