Greeley police found a man who had been shot and beaten when they searched an SUV they stopped after several police agencies chased it through Northern Colorado.
It all started a little before 2:30 a.m. when someone reported hearing a possible gunshot in the parking lot of Walmart at 250 W. 65th Street in Loveland.
When Loveland officers arrived, they saw a sport utility vehicle speeding away.
Officers turned on their lights and sirens to stop the vehicle but the driver sped up. Police started to chase the SUV but called it off because they hadn't identified any "violent, felonious criminal activity."
Deputies from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office spotted the SUV in east Loveland and also tried to get the driver to pull over. The driver headed eastbound on US 34 but the deputies did not pursue the SUV into Weld County.
After that, officers from the Greeley Police Department located the SUV and finally got the driver to stop. The driver and a passenger jumped out and stole a different car, police said.
While checking the SUV, Greeley officers found a 48-year-old Fort Collins man inside. The man had been shot and beaten.
Police said the man was transported to North Colorado Medical Center where he is being treated. Investigators did not provide any information about the extent of his injuries.
A little bit later, Greeley officers attempted to stop the suspects in the stolen vehicle.
The suspects took off again, and officers chased them westbound on US 34 towards Loveland.
Deputies used Stop Sticks on the vehicle as it crossed into Larimer County. The tired deflated and the suspects stopped on the northbound on-ramp to I-25 from US 34.
Two men were taken into custody. Their identities are being withheld for now.
There is still a third suspect at large. Loveland officers have located what they currently believe to be the handgun used to assault the victim.
Police said the victim and suspects know each other.
The northbound ramp to I-25 from US 34 was closed for a short time while police investigated.
