AURORA, Colo. — Two schools were on lockdown and three juveniles were detained after Aurora police received a social media threat of a person holding what appeared to be a gun Wednesday afternoon.

Prairie Middle School and Overland High School were on lockdown around 11 a.m. after Cherry Creek Schools tweeted that there was a “potential threat inside one of the buildings.” The schools were put on secured perimeter around 12:30 p.m., meaning students could move around the building but were not allowed to leave or enter the buildings.

Aurora police said they received a Snapchat threat that showed a juvenile holding what appeared to be a gun. The school district said the threat indicated the person may have been inside a restroom in one of the buildings.

Police detained that juvenile, as well as two other juveniles off campus. Police did not release their names or ages, or say if they were students at either school. Police said one of the juveniles was a female, but did not comment on the other two.

Cherry Creek Schools said there is no longer a threat at either school. The buildings will continue to have a secure perimeter while police investigate.

Police said they confiscated the gun involved in the threat, which was indeed a toy. They said it was not at the school.

Police said the person or persons responsible for the threat will face "appropriate charges."
