LONGMONT, Colo. – The J.M. Smucker Company says a new manufacturing facility in Longmont will create as many as 500 jobs when it’s complete.

The company announced on Tuesday that it plans to begin construction soon on a $340 million facility to manufacture its popular Smucker’s Uncrustables sandwiches.

Uncrustables are ready-made, frozen peanut butter and jelly sandwich pouches that are meant to be thawed before eating.

Smucker’s said Uncrustables have grown to a $200 million business and the new Longmont facility will add production capacity to complement its existing plant in Kentucky. That facility is currently capable of producing as many as two million Uncrustables a day and will continue to produce that many going forward, the company said.

The construction process will take place in two phases. The first will cost $200 million and will create about 250 jobs, the company said. If demand allows, the remaining $140 million will go toward an expansion that would make room for up to 500 employees.

Construction on the Longmont facility will begin in the spring with the goal of starting production in 2019.
