CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — Authorities are investigating a plane crash on Department of Corrections property in Canon City Sunday, according to a statement from the Fremont County Sheriff's Office.
The single-engine Piper plane went down around 2 p.m. near the Fremont County Airport on property adjacent to Colorado's Supermax prison, the maximum-security facility known officially as the USP Florence ADMAX.
A spokesperson for the National Transportation Safety Board said three people were on board the plane at the time of the incident. However, the extent of their injuries is unknown.
The Colorado Department of Corrections has secured the scene with assistance from the Fremont County Sheriff's Office, the statement read. The National Transportation Safety Board has been notified and is on its way to the scene.
The plane was recently sold to a company or person based in Fremont County, according to an FAA tail number inquiry.
