EDGEWATER, Colo. – Police took a 40-year-old man into custody early Saturday morning after a standoff lasted all day at the man's home in Edgewater.

John Cruz Jr. surrendered to officers shortly before 1 a.m. and no one was injured during the incident, Edgewater police said.

Officers first responded about 7:30 a.m. Friday to the home in the 2500 block of Fenton, where residents had reported hearing shots fired. Police said Cruz, who lives at the home with his parents, was barricaded in the home.

Officers tried for hours to negotiate a peaceful surrender, and at one point, shots were exchanged between Cruz and police. Officers had also hurled tear gas into the home to try to get Cruz to come outside earlier in the day.

His parents got outside of the home early Friday and were OK.

Police said there was no danger to nearby residents. Cruz faces charges of attempted murder of a police officer, felony menacing with a firearm, criminal mischief, failure to leave premises or property upon request of a peace officer, resisting arrest and illegal discharge of a weapon. He was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
