MESA COUNTY, Colo. – Authorities say they’re seeing a familiar phone scam targeting a new group in Mesa County: Registered sex offenders.
The call follows a format seen in many other phone scams: The caller says there’s a warrant out for the person’s arrest and demands money to remedy the situation.
In this case, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office says scammers are calling registered sex offenders and demanding the offender deliver a certain amount of money to be taken off of the sex offender registry.
No amount of money will have someone’s name taken off the list – only a court can do that.
The sheriff’s office said deputies will never call to inform a person of a warrant nor will they ever demand money over the phone.
