BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. -- The mystery surrounding human remains and a severed foot found inside a shoe at Eldora ski resort was partially solved Tuesday.
The Boulder County Coroner identified the remains as Ervin Mettler of Denver. His cause and manner of death are still not known.
Mettler's severed foot was found in a boot on June 1. About a month later, more of his skeletal remains were discovered scattered over a small area at the resort.
It is unknown how long the remains were on the hillside, but it appeared to be at least several months, as the remains were well-weathered.
Officials believe Mettler was camping.
