DENVER – A large plume of black smoke that could be seen from miles away in Denver Tuesday stemmed from a fire that damaged six buildings just south of I-70 and York Street and injured two firefighters.

Denver Fire officials responded to the second alarm fire at 4236 York Street shortly before noon Tuesday.

Greg Pixley, a spokesperson for the Denver Fire Department, said the fire started in an unoccupied home that fire crews originally thought was abandoned. It then spread to a store and four other nearby buildings, which Pixley said may have been abandoned.

Two firefighters were injured fighting the flames — one with a back injury and the other with minor burns, Pixley said.

Pixley said the blaze got worse than it should have due to high winds in the Denver metro area.

Pixley said the fire is not considered suspicious in nature.
