Canon City — Although they're not believed to be a threat, state and federal officials are searching for three Afghan prison workers who were in the U.S. for training and went missing in Canon City.
The three employees, who were vetted by the U.S. State Department, didn't return from an organized trip on Saturday evening to a designated meeting spot.
According to Mark Fairbairn, a spokesperson for the Department of Corrections, the safety of the visitors is the department's primary concern. He said his department has not been told of any risk of terrorism.
The U.S. State Department has a policy barring the release of names of those on visas, so the U.S. declined to name the three missing people.
This disappearance is the latest in a string of such disappearances at the International Correctional Management Training Center in Canon City since it opened in 2011.
Two Afghan trainees who visited the facility at separate times in 2013 and 2014 also disappeared.
